What career do I aspire to? Which colleges should I apply to?

However, a newer query has emerged in discussions: How might artificial intelligence (AI) impact my future job prospects?

As AI becomes more commonplace in both classrooms and workplaces, students are now considering how this technology could influence their educational and career choices. While some are reconsidering fields they fear may be affected by automation, others believe AI will transform rather than eliminate their future careers.

Sanyukta Ravishankar, a senior at Saratoga High School, initially didn’t prioritize AI when thinking about college majors. But lately, she has noticed it becoming a hot topic in discussions about higher education and job options.

“I attended a college counseling workshop where we talked about how AI could take over a lot of computer science jobs,” she explained.

The Jobs of the Future

Sierra Ward, a college and career advisor at Saratoga High, emphasizes that more students are wondering which jobs will remain secure. “People are trying to figure out what jobs will be safe and what fields will still have openings,” she said, noting that some students are even asking if they should take computer science courses at all.

Others have already changed their academic paths due to concerns about AI. For instance, Nithya Grandhi, a junior at Lynbrook High School, initially wanted to pursue computer science after being inspired by coding through robotics. However, she found that many entry-level jobs in the field might soon be automated.

Instead of leaving tech behind, Nithya has shifted her focus to mechanical and electrical engineering.

Perspectives Differ

Opinions on AI’s role in job security vary among students. Avinash Yajnik, a rising sophomore at UC Santa Cruz, studied computer science and encountered AI tools like ChatGPT during high school. He acknowledges that while AI might replace some entry-level programming roles, there will still be opportunities for skilled programmers.

“There’s still a place for programmers,” he asserted.

Meanwhile, Hailey Dao, a junior at Carlmont High School, has reconsidered her interest in radiology. After a project to explore potential careers, she learned that AI can perform imaging tasks. But she believes that human oversight remains crucial. “I think you still need human oversight over the conclusions of AI,” she said, suggesting that radiologists could still be needed, although perhaps in fewer numbers.

Embracing AI, Not Fearing It

Some students, however, are not letting AI alter their career plans. Wamad Haroun, a junior majoring in aerospace engineering at San Jose State University, feels that certain fields, such as his own, still require human expertise.

Sanyukta Ravishankar anticipates that the conversations surrounding AI will continue to evolve. “The landscape of AI is likely to be very different in the next five years,” she said. “Right now, it’s mainly chatbots and behind-the-scenes data processing. In five years, AI might be integrated into everything we do.”

These discussions reflect just how critical it is for students today to prepare for an ever-changing job market influenced by evolving technology.

Students Rethink Career Plans Amid AI Advancements With college application season on the horizon, many students in the Bay Area are facing crucial questions: What major should I choose?
