The speedboat, which had left Hon May Rut Ngoai Island close to Phu Quoc, overturned less than half a kilometer from the shore, leading to passengers crying out for help, according to officials and witnesses.

The boat was carrying 32 tourists from India along with four crew members at the time of the accident. Eyewitness Ashish Kumar recounted, “The boat had just started moving when it tipped over.” He shared that nearby vessels quickly came to assist, but by that time, it was too late for many.

Kumar also noted that there was no immediate medical aid available upon the survivors’ return to shore. Some passengers were reportedly part of a company tour organized by Lava International, a manufacturer of smartphones and electronics. Kumar mentioned that three of his friends were on board; sadly, two did not survive, and one is in serious condition.

Lava International confirmed that members of its team were among those affected by the tragedy, emphasizing their commitment to supporting the victims and their families.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as people struggled to escape the capsized boat. Footage aired on Vietnamese TV displayed turbulent seas and rescuers tossing life buoys to those in the water. Jet skis were utilized to transport survivors to safety, where beachgoers offered first aid.

Rescue efforts saved 21 individuals, and all deceased victims have since been recovered. The injured were taken to local hospitals for treatment.

In response to the disaster, Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung has ordered an investigation to identify those responsible and has called for a review of safety measures in the region.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences via social media, assuring that the Indian Embassy is providing all the necessary assistance.

Most of the tourists on the boat were believed to be from India’s southern states of Telangana and Tamil Nadu. Telangana officials have set up a control room to help coordinate support for affected families. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has reached out to Indian authorities to expedite assistance and ensure the victims’ remains are repatriated swiftly.

Phu Quoc, situated in the Gulf of Thailand, is popular among beachgoers. The nearby Hon May Rut island is known for its stunning white-sand beaches and clear waters that attract millions of visitors each year.

Vietnam has become a leading tourist destination for Indians. In 2025, the country welcomed around 750,000 tourists from India, a rise of nearly 50% from the previous year, thanks to increased direct flight connections and a favorable e-visa policy.

This report has been amended to clarify that it was a witness, not Prime Minister Modi, who mentioned that many passengers were on a company-organized tour.

Tragic Boat Capsizing in Vietnam Claims Lives of Indian Tourists HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — A heartbreaking incident occurred on Saturday when a boat carrying Indian tourists capsized near southern Vietnam, resulting in the deaths of 15 individuals.
