Dr. Mehmet Oz, head of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, spoke about the issue during an interview on July 6 at the Great American State Fair.

Dr. Oz emphasized that every dollar lost to Medicare fraud comes directly from taxpayers. He noted that this problem has only increased since the COVID-19 pandemic. “If I had to choose one area to focus on to make healthcare cheaper in America, it would be medical fraud,” he said, indicating that losses are around $100 billion a year.

Medicare fraud can take many forms, including billing for services that were never given, charging too much for medical equipment, or even performing unnecessary medical procedures. The U.S. Government Accountability Office reports that this type of fraud is on the rise.

During the Trump administration, efforts to limit fraud improved Medicare program savings significantly, reaching nearly $41.9 billion in 2025, a 59% increase from the previous year.

Dr. Oz cautioned that Medicare fraud not only drains federal resources but also jeopardizes the health and safety of seniors. It can lead to identity theft, unnecessary medical care, and higher insurance costs for those who need these programs most.

He highlighted the dangers that seniors face, especially when scammers trick them into giving away their Medicare numbers, which he likened to giving out a credit card. “These scammers can misuse those numbers for various fraudulent activities,” he warned.

Dr. Oz provided helpful tips for seniors who might be targeted. He urged them never to share their Medicare numbers and to ignore calls from unknown numbers. “Seniors need to be careful; once scammers have key information, it can be too late,” he explained.

By tackling fraud, Dr. Oz believes that it could significantly strengthen the Medicare system. “Removing this corruption could potentially double the lifespan of the trust fund that supports Medicare,” he said, encouraging everyone to be proactive in safeguarding this essential service.

“If you’re worried about Medicare’s long-term sustainability, you have every reason to be concerned,” he added. “But if we can eliminate fraud, it not only helps today but ensures that future generations also have access to this vital program.”

Medicare Fraud: A Growing Concern for Seniors and Taxpayers Washington, D.C. – Medicare fraud has become a serious issue, costing taxpayers billions of dollars and putting the personal information of many Americans at risk.
