Researchers at Edith Cowan University in Australia looked into how vitamins K1 and K2 in our diet could be linked to conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and overall lung function.

Vitamin K1 is mainly found in vegetables and plays a vital role in blood clotting. On the other hand, vitamin K2 is found in fermented foods, dairy, eggs, and meats, helping to manage calcium levels and support bone health.

Chronic respiratory diseases like COPD and asthma are significant health concerns worldwide, causing millions of deaths each year. While treatments are available, these conditions currently have no cure, highlighting the need for effective prevention methods.

COPD is primarily caused by smoking, but exposure to pollutants and irritants can also contribute to the disease. Through their research, scientists analyzed data from over 179,000 participants over a decade. They discovered that people who consumed higher amounts of vitamin K1 had better lung function and a reduced risk of developing COPD.

In fact, those who ate the most vitamin K1 had a 16% lower likelihood of getting COPD. This connection was especially significant among smokers and those in high-risk jobs. However, vitamin K2 did not show the same effect on COPD rates.

Professor Marc Sim, one of the study leaders, suggested that vitamin K might activate proteins that keep lung tissue flexible and help prevent damage. While this study indicates a link between higher vitamin K1 intake and better lung health, it cannot definitively prove that it directly lowers the risk of COPD.

For those looking to increase their vitamin K1 intake, adding just one extra serving of leafy greens can be a simple and effective strategy. Other good sources of vitamin K1 include collard greens, Swiss chard, Brussels sprouts, and turnip greens.

Incorporating these vegetables into your meals could be a tasty way to support your lung health!

Eating Leafy Greens Linked to Better Lung Health Recent studies have found a strong connection between eating leafy green vegetables, like spinach, kale, and broccoli, and improved lung health.
