He also stated that existing trade agreements with those countries would be nullified.

In a message on his Truth Social platform, Trump said, “Any country that imposes such a tax will immediately face a 100% TARIFF on all goods sent to the United States.” He further emphasized that this tariff would override any trade deals, regardless of whether they were signed or implemented.

The Trump administration has long opposed the digital services tax, arguing that it unfairly targets major American tech companies like Alphabet and Meta.

Will India Be Affected?

Most likely, India will not be impacted. The country has already revoked its Equalisation Levy, which was commonly referred to as the “Google Tax.” This tax primarily affected foreign technology companies, especially those based in the US.

Introduced in 2016, the “Google Tax” was set at 6% on payments made to foreign digital firms for online advertising services. It applied even if those companies had no physical presence in India. However, last year, changes in the Finance Bill eliminated this tax, effective April 1, 2025. Officials indicated that the decision aimed to ease trade tensions with the US.

India had also removed a 2% Equalisation Levy on non-resident e-commerce operators in the Finance Act, 2024.

Who Will Be Affected?

The primary victims of this tariff threat would likely be European Union (EU) nations. Trump’s announcement came shortly after EU member states approved a trade deal that limits tariffs on European imports to 15%. However, digital services taxes were not included in this agreement and remain a source of contention between the US and the EU.

Since many of the world’s largest tech companies are American, Trump argues that these taxes act as barriers to US exports. Earlier this month, he warned he would impose a 100% tariff on French wine and champagne unless France repealed its digital services tax targeting tech giants.

France initiated a 3% tax in 2019 on revenues generated by tech firms within its borders, including US companies like Facebook and Amazon.

In response to Trump’s recent threats, an EU spokesperson stated that the bloc would “respond swiftly and decisively to defend its rights,” according to news agency AFP.

The US trade representative has consistently cautioned several European nations, including France, Britain, Austria, and Spain, that they could face retaliatory tariffs if they proceed with digital services taxes.

Trump Threatens 100% Tariff on Countries with Digital Services Tax US President Donald Trump issued a stern warning on Friday, declaring that he would impose a 100% tariff on goods from any country that enacts a digital services tax on American firms.
