A baby cries, a pressure cooker hisses, and a phone buzzes with notifications. Amid this chaos, a parent often makes a familiar choice: handing over a screen to soothe their child.

For Pune resident Nikita Prakash Aakhade, this choice became a source of concern. When she was pregnant, she began devouring information about parenting. Once her daughter was born in 2022, a pressing question lingered: “What impact does screen time have on my baby’s brain?”

This question fueled her motivation, leading to the founding of BrainyTots in 2023. Unlike a typical toy company, BrainyTots aims to be a comprehensive “parenting operating system” for the youngest members of Indian society.

A Growing Concern About Screens

India is experiencing a notable shift in parenting styles, with screens becoming increasingly common—appearing in homes, strollers, and even on dining tables. Surprisingly, young children, some of whom cannot yet speak, are also diving into screen time.

Guidelines from pediatric experts recommend that children under two should avoid screens, but the reality is starkly different. Urban toddlers often spend several hours a day on devices, as busy parents seek quick fixes during hectic days.

Experts point out that the issue isn’t just about the time spent in front of screens; it’s what those screens replace. During a child’s early years, essential development occurs through interactions—like eye contact, babbling, and responding to one another. This interaction helps establish the foundations of language and emotional growth. Nikita explains, “A screen doesn’t provide interaction in the same way. It responds, but lacks true connection.”

Recognizing this difference sparked the idea behind BrainyTots, which grew from her personal experience as a tired parent seeking better alternatives.

Designing for Development

After exploring early childhood development frameworks, including respected models from Harvard and Montessori, Nikita identified essential principles: stimulation, interaction, repetition, progression, and rest. She transformed these ideas into tangible products aimed at nurturing specific developmental skills during crucial stages.

One of her first creations was the Rainbow Wheel, intended to encourage babies to strengthen their muscles as they begin to lift their heads. The design encourages movement and motivates babies to reach for it, assisting their physical development.

Another popular product, the Numbers Peg Board, is tailored for children around the age of two. This toy not only helps children understand numbers but also improves their dexterity.

Made in India, for Indian Families

BrainyTots stands out not only because of its thoughtful designs but also due to its local focus. All products are manufactured in India, using familiar materials suited for Indian households. Nikita collaborates with local artisans for production, ensuring that each toy resonates with Indian culture and lifestyle.

The brand truly understands the realities of Indian parents, creating products that fit seamlessly into their everyday routines.

From Home to Market

What started as a personal project has blossomed into a thriving business. Nikita’s first customer was a friend who purchased an early learning kit. Since then, BrainyTots has expanded, now offering about 150 products and reaching significant online platforms.

This bootstrapped venture has ambitious plans, projecting revenues of ₹3 crore in the coming year without seeking external venture capital. Instead, they initially invested ₹25 lakhs to focus on refining their products before expanding.

Recently, BrainyTots received validation with a grant from Dettol and is participating in an anganwadi pilot program, aiming to bring effective parenting strategies to broader communities.

Addressing Modern Challenges

Nikita views her main competition as smartphones, which are ever-present in families today. Acknowledging their popularity, she aims to provide parents with practical, screen-free alternatives to engage their children in play and learning.

Beyond toys, the company has also released The Daily Parenting Toolkit—a practical guide that simplifies parenting strategies into manageable systems. Parents have found it not just informative but a comforting resource.

Future Aspirations

As BrainyTots plans to raise ₹2 crore for further expansion, Nikita remains committed to her core philosophy: prioritizing real interactions over screen time. The goal is clear: to become the go-to early childhood development solution for families in India and beyond.

At its heart, BrainyTots is a reflection of Nikita’s journey as a parent. Rather than presenting herself as an expert, she connects with other parents through shared experiences. Her mission is straightforward: to change that single moment when a parent reaches for a screen—hoping to create lasting connections between children and their family.

If that moment transforms, the positive impact could be significant.

Innovative Parenting Solutions: The Rise of BrainyTots On a humid evening in a typical Indian household, life takes on its usual rhythm.
