Reports indicate that the new meal plan could exclusively feature vegetarian dishes. This change means that eggs, a staple source of nutrition in many Indian government school programs, may no longer be offered. Previously, eggs were included one to two days each week, but now they may be replaced with vegetarian alternatives like paneer, rajma, and soy-based foods, according to local sources.

Critics from the opposition, including some politicians, suggest that this decision is an effort by the BJP to change the traditional food habits in West Bengal, which is known for its non-vegetarian cuisine.

Derek O’Brien, a member of the All India Trinamool Congress and a representative in the Rajya Sabha, expressed his concerns on social media, saying, “By removing eggs from midday meals, you are taking away nutrition from children while pushing vegetarianism. Bengal will not accept this.”

In response to the backlash, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari defended the decision, calling it a “reform focused on nutrition and hygiene.” He assured the public that the meals would still be healthy and satisfying, encouraging those with concerns to not dismiss the initiative.

The midday meal scheme was initiated in 1995 to provide free lunches in government schools, aiming to enhance the nutritional well-being of students.

BJP Government in West Bengal to Partner with ISKCON for School Meals West Bengal’s newly-elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government has decided to collaborate with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), commonly known as the Hare Krishna movement, to serve cooked midday meals in schools under the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
