While addressing the UN Security Council on the topic of “Strengthening the Prevention of and Protection of Education for Children Affected by Armed Conflict,” India’s Ambassador to the UN, Harish Parvathaneni, stated, “Education is a right that should be upheld even during conflicts. Ensuring this right plays a crucial role in achieving lasting peace.” He reassured that India is dedicated to safeguarding children in war zones, helping them learn, grow, and reach their potential.<\/p>\n
Parvathaneni pointed out that without accountability, protection efforts fall short. He stated, “Those who target schools and children must face consequences for their actions.”<\/p>\n
A recent UN report on “Children and Armed Conflict” revealed that in 2025, violations against children in conflict zones hit alarming levels, affecting an unprecedented number of youths. The report verified over 38,000 serious violations, impacting more than 24,000 children\u2014an all-time high since the start of this tracking.<\/p>\n
In particular, the report noted a troubling rise in attacks on schools, which increased by 44% in just one year. Many of these violations stemmed from armed groups that ignored their responsibilities under international law, causing severe damage to civilians and the vital services children rely on.<\/p>\n
Currently, it is estimated that nearly 473 million children\u2014over one in six worldwide\u2014are living in or are fleeing from conflict areas, with around 85 million lacking access to education. “These statistics reflect our failure as a global community to turn promises into reality,” Parvathaneni remarked.<\/p>\n
He highlighted that protecting children’s education is essential for building a better future for any nation. Governments must take the lead in protecting and promoting children’s rights, he insisted.<\/p>\n
In India, the Right to Education is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution, ensuring free and compulsory education for children up to the age of 14. To enhance access to quality education, India has initiated DIKSHA (Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing), a platform that offers interactive educational content in various languages.<\/p>\n
“Our commitment to providing accessible and quality education shapes our international efforts,” Parvathaneni noted, stressing that technology can greatly improve access to education, especially during disruptions like the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n
He advocated for ongoing investments in education for those most affected by conflict. India continues to support educational initiatives for refugees and displaced persons, recognizing that learning continuity is vital for rebuilding lives.<\/p>\n
