Speaking at an event in London, he emphasized that the key to free trade agreements lies in gaining a comparative advantage.

Goyal addressed questions about the trade negotiations between New Delhi and Washington, explaining the importance of understanding competitive benefits. He noted that the U.S. deal cannot proceed without establishing a clear framework for this competitive edge.

During his appearance at the India Global Forum, he mentioned his recent meetings with U.S. trade representatives and expressed confidence about the agreement. “We are very close,” Goyal stated, adding that the U.S. ambassador recently indicated that the interim deal is nearly finalized.

He elaborated on the rationale behind a trade deal that benefits both nations, emphasizing that such agreements focus on providing an advantage in market access. Goyal pointed out that while both sides reached a framework agreement on February 6, it faced setbacks when a U.S. Supreme Court ruling invalidated important tariff structures shortly after.

At the time of the initial agreement, Indian goods faced high tariffs in the U.S., which the deal sought to reduce substantially. “We negotiated to lower those tariffs from 50% to 18%,” he explained, highlighting how this change would position Indian exporters favorably compared to competitors from neighboring countries.

Goyal also clarified the need to develop a robust competitive advantage, especially against countries like Vietnam, Thailand, and China. He stated that the discussions are about ensuring India remains attractive for trade, given the evolving tariffs and market conditions.

The minister confirmed that although much of the deal was settled back in February, ongoing negotiations are essential to finalize the details, drawing a parallel with previous agreements like the India-UK Economic and Trade Agreement, which is set to be the most extensive free trade pact India has signed.

With the anticipation of these trade arrangements, India is looking at opportunities that will come into effect soon, marking a significant step in strengthening economic ties with the U.S. and other nations.

India and US Close to Interim Trade Agreement New Delhi – India and the United States are on the verge of finalizing an interim trade deal, according to Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal.
