In fact, Serbia ranks among the top three countries in the world for raspberry exports.<\/p>\n Mileta Pilcevic, who leads a local group of raspberry growers, shared, \u201cWe are born, we live, and we die with raspberries. Arilje is one-of-a-kind. You won’t find another place this small that produces so many berries.\u201d<\/p>\n The town’s hilly terrain is perfect for growing raspberries. The berries are cultivated naturally, without chemicals, and are carefully hand-picked to ensure they meet high-quality standards. However, this work is challenging. Recent years have brought unpredictable weather and fluctuating prices, creating uncertainty for the farmers.<\/p>\n Most raspberry farms are family-run, passed down through generations. With about 17,000 residents, Arilje contributes around 20% of Serbia\u2019s raspberry exports, with annual yields averaging between 15,000 to 20,000 tons.<\/p>\n Pilcevic noted that it takes at least two years for a raspberry field to mature. The delicate fruit needs attentive care to develop its well-known smell and taste. \u201cNothing should be done with machines or chemicals,\u201d he emphasized.<\/p>\n The picking season begins in early summer, attracting many seasonal workers, including those from other countries. Local resident Nada Marinkovic mentioned that weeding and maintenance must be done by hand, and picking can be tough due to the heat.<\/p>\n Approximately 90% of Serbia’s raspberries are exported frozen, while the rest are sold locally. Some producers even sell their berries and natural juices directly online. The frozen raspberries are mostly used in Europe for various food products, from jams to yogurts.<\/p>\n This year, the raspberry harvest is expected to decline by 20-30% compared to the usual amounts, mainly due to last year’s drought. Many producers worry about how extreme weather, possibly driven by climate change, affects their crop yields and prices.<\/p>\n Pilcevic expressed frustration over low offers for raspberries, which often leave farmers struggling to make a profit.
