During a recent ceremony for a new destroyer, he proposed that North Korea build two large warships each year for the next five years.

At the event held in Nampho, Kim emphasized the need to construct warships similar in size to the Choe Hyon-class vessel, which weighs around 5,000 tons. This comes after witnessing successful launches of two cruise missiles and three anti-ship missiles from this destroyer back in April.

According to state media reports, Kim celebrated the new multipurpose destroyer’s completion, stating that it successfully passed military tests over the past 14 months. He described the Choe Hyon as a significant step toward enhancing North Korea’s military capabilities.

Kim also mentioned that the navy’s focus on nuclear advancements is progressing, contributing to the nation’s nuclear deterrence strategy. Analysts have noted that the naval branch is often seen as one of the weaker areas of North Korea’s military, making this buildup particularly noteworthy.

Plans include not only more 5,000-ton destroyers but also larger 10,000-ton strategic warships. One such ship, named Kang Kon, was revealed last year but faced challenges during its initial launch. After repairs, it has now been relaunched.

Kim expressed his vision for North Korea’s navy as a formidable force, stating that it would become “something incredible beyond imagination.” He also recognized the urgent need to modernize naval bases and indicated that new naval base construction is under consideration.

During a recent Party meeting, Kim hinted at upcoming changes regarding the navy’s role and operational scope but did not provide further details. This effort to strengthen the navy reflects North Korea’s ongoing military ambitions on the global stage.

North Korea Plans Major Naval Expansion North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has announced plans to significantly increase the country’s naval forces.
