Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced on Tuesday that the Indian Meteorological Department anticipates weak rainfall to continue through the week ending July 2.

Monsoon rains are crucial for India, supplying nearly 70 percent of the country’s annual precipitation. This is especially important for the 1.4 billion people living in the nation, where around half of the farmland is not irrigated and a significant portion of the population depends on farming for their livelihoods.

Typically, the monsoon arrives in Kerala, located in the southwest, on June 1 and moves northward. However, this year, it was delayed by three days, raising concerns about potential repercussions for India’s $4 trillion economy. The rains are essential for farmers growing crops such as cotton, soybeans, sugar cane, rice, and corn.

This year’s shift in weather patterns has been attributed to climate change and the El Niño phenomenon, which is expected to reduce rainfall further. Last week, authorities in Mumbai imposed restrictions on water usage due to the ongoing dry conditions. Many residents, struggling with the heat and lacking air conditioning, sought relief by sleeping on beaches.

In a hopeful note, on Tuesday, Mumbai experienced its first significant rainfall after weeks of sweltering heat, bringing relief to the city’s 22 million residents. However, some suburbs only received light showers, highlighting the uneven distribution of the monsoon rains.

Minister Chouhan emphasized the importance of water conservation amidst these climatic challenges. “Every drop of water is precious, and planning is being carried out with this objective,” he stated, underscoring the urgency to repair and enhance water storage infrastructure.

The Meteorological Department had previously warned last month that the El Niño condition could lead to the driest monsoon season in 11 years. Australia’s weather bureau also indicated that the El Niño might intensify in the latter half of the year, potentially becoming one of the strongest in decades.

As India prepares for the implications of this unusual weather, the focus remains on ensuring the nation’s food security and economic stability in these uncertain times.

India Faces Severe Drop in Monsoon Rains, Impacting Agriculture New Delhi – India is bracing for a challenging monsoon season as rainfall is reported to be 43 percent lower than average, raising concerns over the country’s vital crops.
