The United States has approved two significant technical support programs for India\u2019s artillery guns and attack helicopters. These initiatives are set to cost around $428 million, which is roughly \u20b94,000 crore.<\/p>\n
The first program involves $230 million designated for sustaining the Indian Army’s M777 ultra-light howitzers. These guns were notably used for precise strikes during Operation Sindoor in May of last year, targeting terrorist camps in Pakistan.<\/p>\n
India has requested comprehensive support for these howitzers, including spare parts, repairs, training, and technical assistance, as outlined in a recent notification from the US. This sustainment program comes shortly after India replenished its stock of specialized artillery ammunition known as ‘Excalibur,’ which is designed for precision targeting. During Operation Sindoor, several terrorist camps were successfully hit by Excalibur on May 7, last year. Following this operation, India acquired 216 Excalibur projectiles from the United States through a $47.1 million deal. The M777 howitzers, which are specially designed for artillery, were purchased from the US nearly ten years ago.<\/p>\n
Additionally, India has sought support for the AH\u201364E Apache attack helicopters, with an estimated cost of $198.2 million. This request includes engineering, technical, and logistics support, as well as training for personnel. Both the Indian Air Force and Army operate the Apache helicopters, which are strategically placed along the country’s western and northern borders.<\/p>\n
The US emphasized that these support programs will help India enhance its capabilities to address current and future threats. They are also expected to bolster India’s homeland defense and serve as a deterrent against regional challenges. The US views this partnership as beneficial for both nations, strengthening the strategic relationship and contributing to stability and progress in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia.
