However, researchers in South Korea may have found a solution with their new invention—a small, self-powered floating capsule. This device, which can easily fit in your hand, tests water quality and purifies unsafe water without needing batteries, extra power, or harsh chemicals.

Easy to Use: Just Shake!

In a recent study published in Nature Water, the capsule, called the Floating-induced Detection-Guided Disinfection (FDGD) capsule, works by generating electricity when shaken. Inside the capsule, a magnet moves through a coil, producing enough power to run a built-in sensor that checks the water’s quality. Users can see the results on a smartphone or smartwatch.

If the water passes the initial check, the capsule can float in it. When there’s movement, such as waves or even just walking, it generates static electricity. This electricity powers tiny nanorods on the capsule’s surface, creating forces that damage the membranes of harmful bacteria and viruses. This method, known as electroporation, neutralizes them without using chemicals.

Promising Results in Testing

Laboratory tests with containers of up to four liters showed that the capsule could inactivate 99.9999% of bacteria and viruses, including E. coli, across various water samples. According to the researchers, this affordable and decentralized technology could be a game-changer for areas lacking proper water treatment systems.

A Unique Approach to Water Purification

While there are many water purifiers on the market, most rely on filters, chemicals, UV light, or rechargeable batteries. The FDGD capsule is different—by harnessing energy from simple movements, it is particularly useful in situations like disaster relief, camping trips, or in remote communities where electricity is limited.

Although the FDGD capsule is still in the prototype stage and needs further testing in real-world conditions, if it can be made widely available at a low cost, it could provide a reliable method for water testing and purification to countless people. Sometimes, the best solutions aren’t large and expensive; they are the small devices that can easily fit in your pocket.

New Device Offers Hope for Clean Drinking Water Access to clean drinking water is a big concern for millions around the world.
