This insight comes from research shared at the Endocrine Society’s annual meeting in Chicago, highlighting the strong connection between obesity and fertility issues in men.

Obesity has been linked to a disruption in the body’s hormone system responsible for testosterone production, particularly the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. When these hormones are thrown off balance, it can lead to low testosterone levels, known as functional hypogonadism, which can negatively affect semen quality.

Researchers focused on how GLP-1 weight-loss drugs influence reproductive hormones and metabolic health in men aged 18 to 65. They examined data from five randomized controlled trials that measured various health indicators, including testosterone levels, hormones relevant to sperm production, and blood metrics like cholesterol and blood sugar.

The findings indicated that GLP-1 medications do not lower male hormone levels. In fact, men dealing with obesity and low testosterone may experience an improvement in testosterone levels, sperm quality, and overall metabolic health while using these drugs, particularly during weight loss.

In a four-week study, the substance called dulaglutide showed no significant changes in reproductive hormones or sexual function. Conversely, a 16-week study involving liraglutide reported better hormone levels in obese men with functional hypogonadism and showed it outperformed traditional hormone replacement therapies.

Another study using liraglutide indicated enhancements in sperm concentration and overall count. A trial involving semaglutide, known as Ozempic and Wegovy, also reported better sperm shape and improved cholesterol levels while maintaining testosterone levels.

While the data come from just five studies, indicating a need for further research, the initial evidence is promising. Researchers concluded that GLP-1 medications do not seem to negatively affect the male hormone system and might improve reproductive health in obese men, primarily through weight loss.

Dr. Anthony Puopolo, a men’s health specialist, expressed optimism about these findings. He suggested that GLP-1 medications could potentially offer a favorable alternative to traditional testosterone replacement therapies, as they may help preserve male fertility.

As these studies continue to evolve, they could change the approach to treating low testosterone in obese men, emphasizing the importance of maintaining reproductive health while addressing weight issues.

New Research Shows Weight-Loss Medication May Boost Male Fertility Recent findings suggest that taking GLP-1 medications for weight loss could enhance male fertility.
