Rise in Teen Abuse of Over-the-Counter Medication Raises Alarms<\/h3>\n

Recent data from poison control centers across the United States reveals a worrying trend: more teenagers are misusing commonly available over-the-counter medications. <\/p>\n

The alert from America\u2019s Poison Centers, which represents 53 regional centers, highlights a significant increase in diphenhydramine abuse among adolescents aged 13 to 19. This medication, often found in allergy and sleep aids like Benadryl and Zzzquil, has been linked to a 32% rise in misuse cases, jumping from 10,068 to 13,284 incidents between 2024 and 2025.<\/p>\n

During the first five months of 2026 alone, there were 6,179 cases of diphenhydramine use among teens, which is more than double from the previous year. According to the Poison Centers, this rise is largely due to recreational use rather than accidental overdoses, with 13% of cases in 2026 attributed to intentional misuse, up from 7.3% in 2020.<\/p>\n

Improper use of diphenhydramine can lead to various health issues, including drowsiness, heart problems, nausea, and even hallucinations. To combat this growing concern, experts urge parents and guardians to safely store medications out of children\u2019s reach and to follow label instructions closely.<\/p>\n

The advisory also suggests that conversations with teenagers about the dangers of misusing medications are crucial. Parents are encouraged to be proactive, especially with the influence of social media trends that may promote unsafe practices.<\/p>\n

In a statement, a representative from Benadryl’s manufacturer, Kenvue, emphasized the importance of safety and declared that the ongoing misuse trends are dangerous and must be halted. The company is actively working with social media platforms to eliminate harmful content and educate the public on safe medication usage.<\/p>\n

Mary Leonard, a communications leader for the Consumer Healthcare Products Association, voiced her concerns over the misuse of over-the-counter medications, reminding everyone that these products are safe when used as directed. <\/p>\n

To help prevent misuse, Kenvue recommends three key steps:<\/p>\n
