This new program, known as the Converged Digital Imaging Platform, marks the largest digital health project of its kind in Europe.

The platform will create a unified diagnostic imaging record for every NHS patient in the area. This means that no matter where patients are located, they can receive consistent and high-quality diagnoses.

This initiative aims to enable earlier detection and treatment for various conditions, including suspected cancers and heart issues, and is viewed as a “once in a generation” opportunity. By enhancing access to scans and sharing expertise across the region, it equips healthcare teams to better meet growing demand for radiology services. This modernization also sets the stage for incorporating new technologies, like artificial intelligence, into everyday practice.

NHS imaging teams will benefit significantly from the ability to collaborate, share expertise, and view images from scans performed at any facility. This collective approach will be advantageous for emergency departments, stroke specialists, and other frontline healthcare teams, providing them with crucial imaging history for urgent decisions.

A key milestone was recently reached as the network’s executive board decided to begin the procurement process for this initiative. According to Dr. Simon Constable, chair of the West Midlands Imaging Network and Chief Executive at University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, this program presents a significant opportunity to improve patient care across a broad area.

He emphasized that this initiative removes geographical barriers, ensuring that every patient has access to top diagnostic expertise, regardless of their location in the West Midlands.

Dr. James Heron, the Medical Director for the West Midlands Imaging Network, pointed out that while diagnostic imaging might not always be visible to the public, it plays a crucial role in ensuring timely and safe care. This project goes beyond just image sharing; it aims to change how diagnostic expertise benefits both patients and healthcare professionals.

The initiative is also expected to reduce costs for trusts by streamlining current contracts with technology suppliers. Once the procurement process is finalized, trusts will implement the new platform gradually as old contracts for radiology systems come to an end.

Nisha Sungum, Director for the West Midlands Imaging Network, highlighted that the needs of patients and healthcare providers will be at the core of this initiative. Whether it’s aiding urgent medical decisions or planning treatments, having complete imaging histories can significantly enhance patient outcomes.

The new platform will modernize the delivery of imaging services and create more choices for patients regarding where and when they can undergo scans.

Dr. Marius Grima, Clinical Digital Lead for the West Midlands Imaging Network, called this a transformative moment for the region. The Converged Digital Imaging Platform will not only improve how imaging services are accessed and reported but also lay the foundation for the future use of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence.

He noted that this complex digital undertaking requires aligning various older systems and integrating imaging solutions while focusing on standards for interoperability. By tackling these challenges, the platform will improve data quality, enhance safety, and create opportunities for cross-location reporting. Ultimately, it will lead to faster and safer diagnoses for patients across the West Midlands, no matter where they seek care.

Major Advancement in NHS Diagnostics Across the West Midlands Fifteen NHS trusts in the West Midlands are moving forward in a groundbreaking initiative aimed at revolutionizing diagnostic imaging across the health service.
