Most human infections are reported in individuals who have traveled to or immigrated from regions like Central and East Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. According to Dr. Yancey, western China has the highest number of human cases.<\/p>\n
The tapeworm spreads among wild animals, primarily canids, cycling between foxes and rodents. People can become infected by accidentally swallowing the parasite’s eggs, often after touching contaminated soil or handling infected pets.<\/p>\n
Symptoms can be subtle and might not appear for years. The infection typically leads to the development of fluid-filled sacs called cysts in the liver or other organs. Symptoms like abdominal pain or coughing might only be noticed when these cysts become large enough to cause pressure on surrounding tissues.<\/p>\n
Two main forms of the infection exist: cystic echinococcosis, where cysts develop in the liver and lungs, and alveolar echinococcosis, a rarer and more dangerous form that can destroy liver tissue and may even spread to the brain.<\/p>\n
While the risk to the general public remains low, there are simple precautions everyone can take to minimize exposure. Dr. Yancey emphasizes the importance of good hand hygiene, particularly washing hands before eating and after being outside.<\/p>\n
Dog owners should prevent pets from eating wild rodents and ensure routine veterinary care. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends avoiding contact with wild animals that might carry the tapeworm and suggests regular testing and treatment for pets to keep both animals and their owners safe.<\/p>\n
