Indian immigrants are not only participating in the workforce but are also major job creators and innovators.

A SIGNIFICANT SHARE OF UNICORNS ARE FOUNDED BY IMMIGRANTS

Many argue that Indian immigrants are taking jobs away from Americans, but the data suggests otherwise. Indian-origin individuals have emerged as leaders in job creation and wealth generation in the U.S.

Immigrants have founded or co-founded 455 of the 775 unicorn companies in America, which is about 59% of all billion-dollar startups in the country. Among these, Indians have founded 96 unicorns, far surpassing founders from other countries like Israel, the UK, and China.

This trend underscores the role of immigrants in bolstering the U.S. as a hub for innovation. Indian-origin founders have been instrumental in developing companies that attract investments, create jobs, and ensure that the U.S. remains competitive in technology.

INDIAN ENTREPRENEURS AS JOB CREATORS

A notable example of success is Perplexity AI, an emerging player in the artificial intelligence market, co-founded by Indian entrepreneur Aravind Srinivas. Currently valued at around $20 billion, it stands out as one of the most successful private startups in the U.S.

Several Indian entrepreneurs, including Mohit Aron, Jyoti Bansal, and Ashutosh Garg, have taken it a step further, building multiple unicorns, according to the NFAP report. The data reveals that nearly two-thirds of U.S. unicorns have been founded by immigrants or their descendants, with around 80% having an immigrant either as a founder or in a key leadership position.

Overall, these immigrant-founded startups collectively hold a valuation of approximately $5 trillion and average 833 employees each. This information contests the view that immigrants are merely beneficiaries of U.S. systems; instead, they are the driving force behind some of the nation’s most successful businesses and technologies.

As immigration debates continue to play a major role in U.S. politics, particularly in light of the previous Trump administration, the NFAP findings present a compelling counterargument to anti-immigration sentiments. The very immigrant communities that some seek to marginalize are actually vital to the vitality of America’s startup ecosystem and technological advancement, with Indian-Americans leading the way.

Despite some conservative groups in the U.S. expressing negativity toward Indian immigrants—particularly concerning H-1B visas and jobs in the tech industry—a new report highlights their significant contributions to the American economy.
