This news was shared on Friday, sparking worries among international observers.

The report from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) indicates that changes to Iran’s Fordo facility are expected to lead to a significant rise in uranium enrichment to levels of up to 60 percent. Previously, Iran produced around 4.7 kilograms of highly enriched uranium each month, but this figure is set to soar to more than 34 kilograms.

Enriching uranium to 60 percent is a critical step towards achieving the 90 percent necessary for creating a nuclear weapon, though Iran maintains that it does not seek nuclear arms. IAEA chief Rafael Grossi, speaking in Bahrain, noted that Iran’s recent actions send a "clear message" amid heightened scrutiny from the nuclear watchdog.

Grossi remarked, "This is a clear message that they are responding to what they feel is pressure," at the Manama Dialogue conference. This increase in production follows an IAEA resolution criticizing Iran for what it described as a lack of cooperation.

The resolution was supported by major powers, including Britain, France, Germany, and the United States, which raises concerns about Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Grossi emphasized the importance of the developments, stating, "The significance cannot be underestimated."

In light of these developments, the IAEA has urged Iran to accept more rigorous inspections to ensure that its nuclear program is not being misused. The agency stressed the need for transparency, aiming to provide assurances that Iran is not diverting nuclear materials for weapons development.

Iran insists that it has a right to pursue nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and has consistently denied any intentions of developing nuclear weapons capabilities. However, it remains the only non-nuclear-weapon state enriching uranium at such high levels.

In 2015, Iran and key world powers reached a landmark deal intended to limit Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for relief from tough sanctions. Despite complying with the agreement initially, Iran intensified its nuclear program after the United States withdrew from the accord in 2018 during Donald Trump’s presidency, re-imposing severe sanctions.

As Trump prepares to return to office in January, tensions remain high, though Iran, along with Britain, France, and Germany, recently agreed in Geneva to continue diplomatic discussions amidst the growing strain in relations.

Iran Plans Significant Boost in Uranium Production, Raising Concerns VIENNA: A recent confidential report from the UN nuclear agency reveals that Iran plans to greatly increase its production of highly enriched uranium.
