A recent announcement from US Customs and Border Protection stated that these individuals were among 52 people apprehended in Arizona’s Yuma Sector over a four-day period from May 11 to May 15. They are now set for deportation.

Of the 52 arrests, 36 individuals were found operating semi-trucks. The detained group includes not only the 30 Indians but also six other individuals from Mexico, El Salvador, and Russia. The US Customs report mentioned that all those arrested are being processed according to federal law.

While the identities of the 30 Indians and others involved have not been disclosed, the operation is part of a broader initiative called ‘Operation Checkmate.’ This initiative aims to identify and arrest commercial vehicle operators living unlawfully in the country.

Acting Chief Patrol Agent of the Yuma Sector, Dustin W. Caudle, emphasized that “Operation Checkmate reflects our commitment to keeping our communities and roads safe from drivers who should not be on the road.” He also noted that his agents conduct daily patrols to prevent potential accidents caused by unlawful drivers.

This enforcement action occurs in the wake of worrying incidents involving Indian truck drivers in the US. Notably, 21-year-old Jashanpreet Singh, who entered the US illegally in 2022, was involved in a fatal crash in California that killed three people while he was reportedly under the influence. Similarly, another Indian driver, 28-year-old Harjinder Singh, was part of a tragic accident in Florida that also resulted in three deaths.

These incidents have raised calls for stricter regulations regarding the issuance of commercial driver’s licenses to non-citizens. In response, former President Donald Trump introduced a measure known as the ‘Dalilah Law.’ This law aims to prohibit immigrants without legal status from obtaining commercial driver’s licenses, citing a specific case involving an illegal immigrant who caused a serious accident.

As the situation unfolds, authorities continue to focus on ensuring safety on the roads by addressing the presence of unlawfully residing drivers.

30 Indians Detained by US Border Patrol for Illegal Residency At least 30 Indian nationals have been arrested by US Border Patrol agents for living illegally in the United States.
