In response, they are stepping up their own political spending and adopting strategies similar to those used by crypto advocates.

Recently, the Financial Services Forum, a group representing the eight largest banks in the U.S., created three new organizations aimed at raising millions for upcoming elections. This approach is similar to that of the cryptocurrency sector, where a single organization funds efforts on both sides of the political spectrum. Fairshake, a major crypto group, became the largest single-issue super PAC during the 2024 election, while banks are using 501(c)(4) advocacy groups, often referred to as “dark money” groups, which can spend large amounts to influence elections.

The American Growth Alliance, one of the banks’ initiatives, supports both the center-left Opportunity Forward Alliance and the conservative Alliance for Economic Freedom. Reports suggest they have already raised around $100 million for this election cycle, with significant funds already being spent on advertisements across multiple states.

According to Bill Daley, who has extensive experience in Washington and Wall Street, banks have faced a tough decision since the financial crisis about whether to proactively defend their interests or remain passive. He believes they have now made a choice to actively engage in the political landscape.

In a statement, the American Growth Alliance expressed a commitment to raising awareness about economic issues, including job creation and affordability, while emphasizing their bipartisan agenda to support policies that help American families.

After the financial crisis of 2008, banks were cautious about lobbying, but this began to change in 2023 when new proposals for stricter capital requirements arose. This led to intense lobbying efforts, the fiercest in years.

On the crypto front, Brian Armstrong, the CEO of Coinbase, had plans to enhance the industry’s influence in Washington. Coinbase became a major donor to Fairshake, which, along with two affiliated super PACs, spent around $135 million on various candidates during the 2024 elections. As a result, several candidates supported by this funding now sit on committees overseeing the crypto sector, pushing forward initiatives related to digital assets.

One notable case is Senator Bernie Moreno from Ohio, who received significant backing from the crypto lobby, defeating Sherrod Brown, a known critic of cryptocurrencies. This spending strategy has proven helpful for crypto in legislative discussions with banks, particularly regarding a digital asset bill that includes regulation on stablecoin yields.

The Genius Act, signed into law last summer, prohibits primary issuers from paying interest on stablecoins but leaves the debate about exchanges, like Coinbase, that might want to offer interest on stablecoins to later legislation, known as the Clarity Act.

Stablecoin yields are a major topic, as crypto firms see potential for attracting consumers with high returns, while banks argue for stricter regulations to prevent risks associated with such products.

The ongoing battle over legislation has seen numerous discussions, including personal meetings involving key figures from both industries. In May, the Senate Banking Committee moved forward with the Clarity Act, which aimed for a compromise. However, it still restricts crypto firms from offering returns on idle balances, appeasing banks wary of losing deposits. Lobbying groups from the banking side have already expressed dissatisfaction with the bill.

As the midterm elections approach, spending by both the banks and the crypto sector is expected to increase. Opportunity Forward Alliance has already invested $3.1 million into supporting pro-business candidates on the left and allocated $1.6 million for upcoming ads focused on economic issues in states like Oregon and Texas.

On the other hand, the Alliance for Economic Freedom is backing Republican candidates in key states such as Michigan and Wisconsin, aligning with some crypto interests at times.

Overall, the crypto industry has also been active in the midterm elections, with multiple super PACs investing heavily to influence various contests. Together, these super PACs have reported over $57 million in spending so far, showcasing the growing significance of both banks and crypto firms in shaping political outcomes.

Wall Street Boosts Political Spending Amid Crypto Influence Wall Street leaders have been taken aback by the rising political power of the cryptocurrency industry, especially after the 2024 elections.
