The United States remains the top country for sending remittances, contributing more than $100 billion last year.

These figures have sparked discussions online about immigration, foreign workers, and how remittances influence the American economy. One user on X pointed out, “India received about $272 billion in remittances over the last two years. The US is the number one sender. Immigrants come here on visas and send money back, impacting our economy and job market.”

An infographic shared with this post highlighted the connection between India’s remittance growth and the rising number of Indian professionals in the US, especially through the H-1B visa program. It noted that remittances to India have surged by 156% since 2010, with Indian nationals receiving 71% of all H-1B visas granted in the US. The infographic showed remittances growing from $53.5 billion in 2010 to $137 billion in 2024, with a small drop expected in 2025, before climbing again to a potential high of $145 billion in 2026.

The IOM’s World Migration Report 2026, released in early May, emphasized that India has held the top spot for remittances since 2010. The amounts received have steadily increased each year, rising from $53.48 billion in 2010, to $68.91 billion in 2015, and then to $83.15 billion in 2020 before reaching the current record.

The report also pointed out that high-income countries are the primary source of global remittance flows. Following the US, countries like Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, and Germany also contribute significantly.

India’s large remittance inflows are closely linked to its extensive global workforce, particularly skilled professionals working in technology, healthcare, finance, and engineering fields. Many Indians abroad send money back home to support their families, invest in education, and buy properties.

Additionally, there is a growing number of Indian students studying overseas. In 2022, India ranked second globally for the number of international students, with over 620,000 pursuing education abroad. The majority of these students are found in Europe and North America.

The IOM report highlighted that the Indian diaspora has significantly influenced the nation’s technology and innovation sectors. It emphasized, “The Indian diaspora has played a crucial role in enhancing India’s tech landscape.”

The report also addressed concerns about “brain drain,” noting that while some worries exist, there are benefits when skilled migrants share their talents and networks back home. India is making efforts to attract experts back through initiatives like annual diaspora conventions and innovation hubs, which aim to draw back scientists and entrepreneurs. Similarly, China has seen success with its Thousand Talents Plan, inviting overseas Chinese academics to return and support domestic research.

Overall, India’s impressive remittance figures underline the important role its diaspora plays in the country’s economy and development.

India Leads the World in Remittances for 2024 India has once again secured its position as the largest recipient of remittances globally, receiving over $137 billion from its overseas workers and migrants, according to a recent report by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
