This pressure stems from financial worries, healthcare expenses, and family dynamics, as noted by Florence Bicott, an associate professor specializing in agricultural safety and health at Penn State University.

Bicott explained that the unique stresses in farming communities often lead to higher rates of depression and anxiety among farmers. Alarmingly, studies show that farmers are three and a half times more likely to die by suicide compared to other professions.

“Research indicates a different pattern when it comes to suicides in farming,” Bicott said. “Many farmers may not show signs of mental illness, making it hard to recognize their struggles.”

Stigma and isolation, paired with a lack of accessible resources, often stop farmers from seeking help. Fortunately, programs like the Farm Family Resource Initiative and Illinois Extension are available, providing free support to farmers and their families. For urgent needs, the suicide crisis hotline at 988 offers immediate assistance.

Concerns regarding mental health in agriculture have grown over the last 15 years. Issues such as labor shortages, the challenge of retaining workers, and increasing consolidation in the industry all take a toll on mental well-being, according to Bicott.

Though men make up over 60% of the agricultural workforce, the mental health of women in farming is often overlooked. Bicott pointed out that a national study revealed that nearly half of the surveyed farmers with children under 18 reported experiences of pre- or postpartum depression in their households.

While there are federal and state initiatives specifically aimed at farmers, the response to mental health challenges tends to fluctuate with the crises they face.

As National Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, Bicott urges the need for continuous investment in mental health resources.

“Mental health issues in agriculture are persistent rather than temporary,” she stated. “We need to ensure that the programs we create are sustainable, so they remain available regardless of the circumstances. It’s crucial not to lose the valuable work that is being done.”

Supporting Mental Health in Illinois’ Agricultural Communities Experts emphasize the urgent need to prioritize mental health support for farmers in Illinois, highlighting the necessity for more lasting solutions.
