The Church is stepping up to help.

In the United States, May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month, and this year started with some encouraging news. A recent study from the Journal of the American Medical Association revealed a notable decline in youth suicides since the introduction of the 988 hotline in 2022. The research shows that, between 2022 and 2024, there were 4,372 fewer suicides among young individuals aged 15 to 34 than previously expected, equating to an 11% reduction that is statistically significant.

The hotline number to remember is 988.

Researchers aimed to explore how this new hotline impacted young people—who are more likely to seek help via such services. Interestingly, older adults, who tend not to use these hotlines as frequently, saw only a slight decrease in suicide rates. In contrast, the lack of a similar hotline in the UK meant no noticeable decline for young people there. The greatest reductions in youth suicides in the U.S. were found in areas with higher hotline engagement.

It’s particularly relevant that many young users reached out after experiencing isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted their education, employment, and social lives. This age group was already at a greater risk for depression, making the reported drop in suicide rates quite hopeful.

Experts are advocating for continued government support for the hotline.

Dr. Vishal Patel, a resident physician and study author, explained, “The results show that the government’s investment in launching the 988 service has led to a measurable decrease in deaths. Our study adds evidence that this program has a profound benefit—particularly among young people. This highlights the need for ongoing funding.”

The Church’s Role in Mental Health Awareness

While the drop in youth suicide rates is encouraging, mental health experts emphasize that the hotline is just one part of the solution. Despite the promising news, rates of depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues are on the rise among young individuals. According to the CDC, in 2023, 40% of high school students reported ongoing feelings of sadness or hopelessness, and one in five experienced anxiety within the previous two weeks.

Pope Leo XIV addressed this issue during a speech at La Sapienza in Rome, expressing deep concern for the struggles many young people face. He said, “We must acknowledge that many young individuals are battling significant challenges. Some may feel trapped in their difficulties, and the pressure to succeed can make these feelings even worse.”

He continued, emphasizing the importance of recognizing each person’s value beyond material possessions, stating, “We are a desire, not an algorithm.”

This concern for mental health should resonate within the Church community, from bishops to parishioners, as reminded by Bishop Keith J. Chylinski of Philadelphia. In a recent video, he urged Catholics to eliminate the stigma around mental illness and support those who may be struggling.

“There is great hope in the Lord and in the advancements of medical science,” he said. “As our awareness of mental health grows, remember that the Church and mental health professionals have much to offer. Seeking help is nothing to be ashamed of, as God desires our well-being—mind, body, and spirit.”

Bishop Chylinski’s message is part of a broader initiative by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to address mental health, with various resources available through the National Catholic Mental Health Campaign’s website, Healing and Hope.

Let’s remember that our commitment to support those facing mental health challenges goes beyond just May and should continue throughout the year.

Positive Trends in Youth Mental Health Amid Ongoing Challenges Youth suicide rates have dropped thanks to a new 3-digit national hotline, but mental health issues still affect many people across all ages.
