Paterson High School is making strides towards modern education. In a heartfelt tribute to a well-known Eastern Cape doctor, the family has transformed one of its classrooms into a state-of-the-art digital learning environment.<\/p>\n
Last week, the newly upgraded classroom was unveiled as a homage to the esteemed anaesthetist Lionel Smith, who played a significant role in shaping the lives of many doctors in Nelson Mandela Bay before his passing in 2025. The renovation, which cost over R100,000, features advanced technology and internet-based learning tools.<\/p>\n
This newly designed classroom includes a large 75-inch internet-enabled television, fresh flooring, improved windows, and a modern interior, all aimed at enhancing digital learning. The setup allows lessons to be recorded and shared with students, enabling them to revisit the material at their own pace. Additionally, the TV is equipped with educational software focusing on coding, robotics, and science subjects.<\/p>\n
Paterson High was among the first schools in the area to introduce coding and robotics and has recently launched a Science Steins Club, furthering its commitment to innovative learning.<\/p>\n
Percy Smith, Lionel’s brother, shared that the decision to invest in the school was deeply personal, as both he and his late brother’s wife, Sandra, are alumni of Paterson High. Although Lionel did not attend the school, the family wanted to make a meaningful contribution. \u201cWe decided to refresh the classroom by painting, tiling, and replacing windows,\u201d Percy explained. \u201cWe’ve also added a 75-inch flatscreen television.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sandra described her late husband as a devoted mentor who had a significant impact on many lives. \u201cLionel was always doing something to help others. He inspired so many and was the first non-white doctor at Greenacres Hospital.\u201d She recalled how he later focused on training young doctors after facing challenges with his eyesight.<\/p>\n
Paterson High Principal Rose de Doncker expressed her pride in the Smith family’s contribution. \u201cThis classroom is much more than a renovation; it holds great meaning for our students. When I began working here, I heard many stories about the Smith family’s positive influence. We are incredibly grateful to them. This space will equip our learners for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n
District Education Director Ernest Gorgonzola highlighted the Smith family\u2019s impact on the school, noting that Lionel was a significant figure in the community. Percy emphasized that his brother always aimed for excellence and offered opportunities to those around him.<\/p>\n
Student Junaid Bredenkamp noted the transformative impact of the new classroom. \u201cFor a long time, the future was just something we read about, but now it has arrived at Paterson High.
