The research, published in the American Journal of Health Economics, highlights how early exposure to water filtration systems can greatly influence longevity.

Researchers looked at changes in public health infrastructure from the early 1900s. They discovered that city water filtration alone increased the average lifespan of older American men by about 3.2 months. Jason Fletcher, a co-author and professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, stated, “While water quality has improved in many areas, this study highlights the real effects on communities lacking safe water, both in the U.S. and worldwide.”

The team analyzed records from the Social Security Administration’s Death Master Files, tracking death records of American men born between 1975 and 2005. By linking this data with historical water filtration records, they were able to assess the impact of clean water on health outcomes.

Not only did filtered water seem to extend life, but it also appears to contribute positively to various aspects of development, such as height, education, and income levels later in adulthood. This suggests that access to clean water in childhood can trigger a beneficial cycle for individuals’ socioeconomic and physical growth.

These findings, part of a broader initiative called the American Mortality Project, focus on how early environmental conditions shape life outcomes. However, it’s important to note that the study primarily analyzed data from American men, leaving questions about how filtered water may have impacted women in the same timeframe.

The analysis was confined to public health changes in U.S. cities during a specific period, which means the results may not apply to rural communities or developing countries. While the increase in lifespan (3.2 months) is significant, it may not have the same implications today in different environments.

Study Finds Filtered Water May Increase Lifespan A recent study suggests that drinking filtered water could potentially add several months to a person’s life.
