This visit aims to strengthen relations between the two countries just a week after positive talks between Washington and Beijing.

Rubio, making his first trip to India, began his four-day journey in Kolkata at the headquarters of Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity. He paid his respects at her tomb and took part in prayers. Dressed in a yellow garland over his suit, he was warmly received by nuns in their signature white and blue saris.

During his visit, Rubio expressed a commitment to helping the less fortunate, including the homeless and those suffering from terminal illnesses. Sister Marie Juan, part of the Missionaries of Charity team, shared that he seemed pleased to engage with them.

The U.S. Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, noted that the visit reflects the shared values that underpin the relationship between the two nations, beyond just policy.

Following his time in Kolkata, Rubio and his wife Jeanette traveled to New Delhi, where a meeting with Prime Minister Modi was scheduled for later in the day. Before concluding his trip on Tuesday, Rubio is set to engage in talks with foreign ministers from Australia, India, Japan, and the U.S., a group often referred to as the Quad, aimed at counterbalancing China’s influence in the region.

China has viewed the Quad with suspicion, accusing it of trying to surround them, and has previously criticized India for its involvement.

This visit comes in the context of shifting U.S. foreign policy under President Donald Trump. Last week, Trump visited China, where he received a warm welcome from President Xi Jinping, although concrete agreements were minimal. Trump’s remarks about the U.S. and China forming a “G2” have stirred concern among U.S. allies.

Rubio’s choice to highlight issues of religious rights is particularly meaningful. His visit is seen as important, especially in light of reports from rights groups about increased violence against minority Christians in India since Modi took office in 2014. The Indian government has dismissed these claims as exaggerated.

Prior to his visit, Rubio referred to India as a “great ally” and expressed interest in enhancing energy cooperation, particularly in oil sales. India’s growing economy heavily relies on energy imports, which have been impacted by ongoing geopolitical tensions, including U.S.-Iran relations.

Additionally, India has been nurturing ties with Israel and has historically maintained relations with Iran, which complicates its diplomatic stance.

As the U.S. navigates its foreign relations, Rubio’s trip signifies an ongoing commitment to strengthening ties with India while addressing various challenges within the broader geopolitical landscape.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio Begins Visit to India On Saturday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio kicked off a significant visit to India, which will involve discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
