During a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides, the two nations launched a framework for defense cooperation and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create a joint working group focused on counterterrorism.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Modi emphasized that the relationship is built on shared values such as democracy and the rule of law, stating India\u2019s commitment to supporting Cyprus&#8217;s sovereignty and territorial integrity amid challenges faced from Turkey. \u201cWe respect the sovereignty of all nations, and India will continue to uphold these principles,\u201d Modi remarked, identifying Cyprus as a vital investment link between India and Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Cyprus is one of India\u2019s top investors, and both leaders expressed a desire to double this investment within the next five years, especially with the anticipated benefits from the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). \u201cThis partnership will enhance trade opportunities, particularly in infrastructure, energy, and agriculture, while also boosting investments in India\u2019s growing maritime sector,\u201d said Modi.<\/p>\n<p>The discussions also covered defense, security, and cooperation in cybersecurity. Modi noted the increased military exchanges between the two countries and outlined plans for enhanced collaboration in maritime security and counter-terrorism efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Recognizing the presence of many Indian students and professionals in Cyprus, both nations agreed to finalize a migration and mobility partnership and a social security agreement soon. <\/p>\n<p>During the talks, Modi addressed global issues such as the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East, emphasizing the importance of peace and stability. The leaders stressed the need for reform in global institutions to tackle emerging global challenges and reiterated their unity against terrorism, condemning cross-border terrorism without any double standards.<\/p>\n<p>The joint statement reflected Cyprus\u2019s support for India\u2019s bid for a permanent seat in a reformed United Nations Security Council.
