The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is gearing up for an important Special General Body Meeting (SGM) this Saturday, where key issues regarding the future of Indian football will be on the table. A central topic will be the commercial framework of the Indian Super League (ISL), especially amid rising tensions between the federation and ISL clubs.<\/p>\n
The agenda will delve into choosing the league’s next commercial partner, suggested changes to the constitution, and the overall future of Indian football following a tumultuous ISL season.<\/p>\n
In its announcement, the AIFF mentioned that one main discussion point will include constitutional revisions that comply with the National Sports Governance Act 2025. There will also be talks on commercial partnerships related to the ISL, the Indian Women\u2019s League, and the Super League Cup.<\/p>\n
### ISL COMMERCIAL RIGHTS UNDER SCRUTINY<\/p>\n
One hot topic as the meeting approaches is the future of the ISL’s commercial rights. Earlier this year, Genius Sports reportedly made the highest bid, offering \u20b92,129 crores for a 15+5 year deal. However, ISL clubs have expressed dissatisfaction with the proposed structure.<\/p>\n
Many clubs are advocating for a more club-focused commercial model that would position Genius Sports as a data and technology partner rather than having a hand in the overall commercial operations. Under this suggested model, ISL teams want to hold onto 90% of the league’s financial benefits, leaving the AIFF with a smaller share.<\/p>\n
This matter has become increasingly urgent due to uncertainties affecting the 2025-26 ISL season, especially following the end of the Master Rights Agreement between the AIFF and FSDL. This deadlock led to significant delays in the league’s start and forced a severely condensed 13-match format, which has caused financial and operational headaches for numerous clubs.<\/p>\n
High-ranking AIFF officials are also expected to engage ISL club owners and representatives prior to the SGM to seek common ground about the league\u2019s commercial future.<\/p>\n
### CONSTITUTIONAL CHALLENGES FOR AIFF<\/p>\n
Interestingly, even before it officially convenes, the SGM has sparked controversy. AIFF executive committee member Valanka Alemao has raised concerns about the legality of the meeting, suggesting it might breach the guidelines established by the Supreme Court for the federation\u2019s constitution.<\/p>\n
In a legal notice, Alemao claimed that the AIFF had not fulfilled the necessary requirements for forming the General Body before calling the meeting. The current structure should include representatives from all member associations, 15 notable players (at least five of whom must be women), representatives from the ISL, I-League, and Indian Women\u2019s League, and voices from referees and coaches.<\/p>\n
Alemao argues that since the associations for players, referees, and coaches have not yet been properly set up, the quorum for the General Body is incomplete. She warned that moving forward with the SGM as it stands could be seen as disrespecting the Supreme Court’s ruling that shaped the constitution.<\/p>\n
Despite these objections, the meeting is expected to push ahead, highlighting ongoing issues in Indian football related to administration, legalities, and the long-term viability of the ISL.
