India and Cyprus Strengthen Strategic Partnership<\/strong><\/p>\n India and Cyprus have taken significant steps to deepen their collaboration, establishing a strategic partnership that focuses on areas like defense, technology, and counter-terrorism. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides met to enhance trade and investment ties.<\/p>\n This visit marked Christodoulides\u2019 first trip to India since assuming the presidency. He began his journey in Mumbai with a 60-member business delegation before heading to New Delhi for discussions with Modi. As Cyprus holds the rotating presidency of the European Union (EU), their talks also looked into the anticipated India-EU trade agreement.<\/p>\n Recognizing Cyprus as a key investment link between India and Europe, Modi noted that it is one of the top ten investors in India, with investments nearly doubling in the last decade. He emphasized the potential for further growth, aiming to double investments in the next five years as they upgrade their relationship to a strategic partnership.<\/p>\n Cyprus contributes significantly to foreign direct investment (FDI) in India, ranking as the ninth-largest source overall and the second-largest from the EU. Since 2000, Cyprus has invested approximately $16 billion in sectors like services, software, automobiles, and pharmaceuticals.<\/p>\n Christodoulides expressed the need for both nations to collaborate on addressing global challenges, highlighting the importance of a strong EU-India partnership amid increasing geopolitical uncertainties.<\/p>\n Modi added that this partnership would enhance trade by linking financial and service sectors, offering Indian companies new avenues in Cypriot infrastructure and agriculture while attracting investments to India’s maritime industry. He singled out defense and security cooperation as a critical aspect, stating a commitment to strengthening ties in cybersecurity and counter-terrorism.<\/p>\n The discussions also included connectivity initiatives, such as the India-led Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI) and the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). Cyprus is actively participating in the IPOI and is co-chairing the trade connectivity and maritime transport pillar.<\/p>\n A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to create a joint working group on counter-terrorism, focusing on information-sharing and enhancing capabilities. Both leaders condemned recent terrorist attacks in India and underscored the importance of international collaboration to combat terrorism, including tackling financing and dismantling terror infrastructure.<\/p>\n Additionally, they developed a roadmap for defence cooperation from 2026 to 2031, paving the way for collaboration between Indian defense companies and Cypriot counterparts, particularly in relation to the EU\u2019s \u20ac150 billion Security Action for Europe initiative.<\/p>\n Other signed MoUs include agreements on innovation, diplomatic training, cultural exchanges, and search-and-rescue coordination.
