Ebola Outbreak Declared Emergency in Central Africa<\/strong><\/p>\n The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Sunday that the Ebola outbreak in Central Africa is a public health emergency. This decision follows reports of numerous deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda.<\/p>\n So far, there have been 80 suspected deaths linked to the outbreak and eight laboratory-confirmed cases, alongside 246 other suspected cases reported across several health zones in DRC. Areas affected include Bunia, Rwampara, and Mongbwalu.<\/p>\n This outbreak is linked to the Bundibugyo virus, which does not qualify as a pandemic emergency according to the WHO. Global health officials are also closely watching a hantavirus outbreak connected to the MV Hondius cruise ship, which caused illness among passengers and crew, leading to three fatalities.<\/p>\n In Uganda, officials confirmed two unrelated Ebola cases, including one death, involving individuals who traveled from DRC. Another case has been reported in Kinshasa, the capital of DRC, involving a person returning from Ituri province. Initial assessments show that this outbreak does not involve the Ebola Zaire strain, which led to a massive epidemic in 2018\u20132020, claiming over 1,000 lives.<\/p>\n Unlike the Ebola-Zaire strains, there are no approved treatments or vaccines for the Bundibugyo strain. The WHO has cautioned that the situation might worsen due to a high rate of positive samples and an increasing count of suspected cases. They emphasized the potential risk to neighboring countries and urged them to activate emergency protocols and conduct cross-border health screenings.<\/p>\n Ebola spreads through body fluids like blood, vomit, and semen, with symptoms including fever, diarrhea, and internal bleeding. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted that the DRC has a strong record in managing Ebola outbreaks.
