A stage is being built, and seating arrangements are being made, but it remains unclear who will officially take the oath of office.

The leaders of the BJP-led coalition, known as Mahayuti, are yet to meet with Governor CP Radhakrishnan to formally claim the right to form the government after a significant victory in the recent state elections. Notably, BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis, Shiv Sena’s Eknath Shinde, and NCP’s Ajit Pawar are currently in different locations. Fadnavis is in Mumbai, Shinde is recuperating in Thane, and Pawar is visiting Delhi for personal reasons.

Today, the BJP legislature party will convene at Vidhan Bhavan, where party MLAs are expected to select their leader. Fadnavis is widely regarded as the top candidate for the Chief Minister role. However, the delay in making an official announcement has sparked speculation. The three coalition leaders are anticipated to gather after the BJP meeting, with a potential meeting with the Governor planned for tomorrow, just before the ceremony.

Sena’s Stance on Government Formation

Amidst the uncertainty, Shinde has stated he will not stand in the way of forming the government and has left the final decision about the Chief Minister position to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. However, his recent absences from Mumbai have raised questions. Recently, he mentioned needing a break following the intense election campaign but is now recovering from an illness while attending meetings online.

Sena leader Deepak Kesarkar has emphasized that the Assembly elections were conducted under Shinde’s leadership, and the BJP’s decisions will reflect on his position. He reassured that the delay is not due to Shinde’s actions, attributing it to BJP’s internal processes. Kesarkar dismissed rumors of discord among the coalition parties, stating that discussions are a routine part of collaboration, and reiterated that Shinde is not unhappy and the alliance remains strong.

However, another Sena leader, Sanjay Sirsat, revealed this morning that Shinde will decide by tomorrow whether he will be part of the new government. Reports suggest that the Sena is advocating for the Home portfolio, but the BJP has not yet agreed to this request.

Opposition Criticism of Coalition Delays

Critics have slammed the Mahayuti for not announcing their Chief Minister choice more than ten days after the election results. Shiv Sena (UBT) legislator Aaditya Thackeray stated that this delay is an insult to Maharashtra. In a recent tweet, he highlighted that, despite their substantial majority, the coalition has failed to prioritize government formation, claiming that the state is being neglected for political maneuvering.

In a decisive win, the Mahayuti coalition secured 230 of the 288 Assembly seats. The BJP alone won 132 seats and is set to assume the Chief Minister’s position, while the Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP won 57 and 41 seats, respectively.

On the other hand, the opposition bloc, Maha Vikas Aghadi, which previously outperformed the Mahayuti in the Lok Sabha elections, faced a significant defeat in the state polls with a mere 46 seats combined. They have raised concerns about potential electronic voting machine (EVM) tampering and are calling for a return to ballot voting. The BJP has outright rejected these claims, stating that such allegations arise only when the opposition loses. The Election Commission has cautioned against spreading false information regarding EVMs, warning that those who do so could face consequences.

Preparations for Maharashtra’s Swearing-In Ceremony Underway New Delhi: Excitement is building in Mumbai as preparations for the swearing-in ceremony of Maharashtra’s new Chief Minister are in full swing at Azad Maidan.
