This is the highest instructional rating for pilots in the IAF.

The IAF expressed that her accomplishment marks a significant moment in the organization’s 93-year history, stating that it will inspire many aspiring aviators throughout the country. “Excellence takes flight. Sqn Ldr Saanya achieved a historic first by becoming the first woman officer to earn the coveted Cat A QFI qualification. Her achievement is a testament to dedication and the relentless pursuit of excellence,” the IAF shared on social media.

Identified by her first name, Saanya is a skilled transport pilot. With the Cat A QFI qualification, she is equipped to train new pilots as well as other instructors. Her qualification comes after ten years of service in the IAF.

This achievement follows the recent accomplishment of Squadron Leader Shivangi Singh, who became the first Indian woman fighter pilot to earn the QFI badge after completing a demanding six-month training course at the IAF’s Flying Instructors’ School in Tamil Nadu. Notably, women pilots in transport and helicopter roles had previously received the QFI badge.

The inclusion of women in the Indian military has evolved significantly since they were first inducted as short-service commissioned officers in the early 1990s. Women now play essential roles, flying fighter jets and commanding units alongside their male colleagues. They have also begun receiving permanent commissions and are even undergoing training at the National Defence Academy.

However, certain roles, such as tank and infantry combat positions, remain restricted for women in the Indian Army. Nonetheless, Saanya’s achievement and the increasing presence of women in significant military roles reflect positive change in the armed forces.

Historic Achievement for Indian Air Force: First Woman Officer Earns Top Flying Instructor Qualification On Monday, the Indian Air Force (IAF) announced a remarkable milestone as Squadron Leader Saanya became the first woman officer to achieve the prestigious Cat A Qualified Flying Instructor (QFI) qualification.
