However, a recent Gallup survey reveals that many Americans are not on board with these developments. The survey found that 70% of people oppose having data centers built in their areas, with 48% expressing strong disapproval. In contrast, only about 25% support the projects, and merely 7% are strongly in favor.

Data centers play a vital role in supporting AI by housing the necessary computing equipment. Yet, they require large amounts of land, electricity, and water, raising environmental concerns and worries about increased local utility costs. Interestingly, this opposition to data centers is higher than the 53% who oppose constructing nuclear power plants in their neighborhoods.

Concerns Behind the Opposition

Many Americans are anxious about the environmental impact of data centers. The survey indicated that 46% of respondents are very concerned, while 24% are moderately worried. When asked why they oppose these facilities, a significant number cited environmental reasons, including resource consumption, with 18% expressing concerns over water and energy usage, as well as pollution.

Additionally, some people worry about the overall quality of life changes, including factors like increased traffic and potential economic impacts such as rising utility bills. Others object to the idea of using taxpayer money to fund such projects.

On the other hand, those in favor of data centers often mention the potential economic benefits, such as job creation, increased tax revenues, and infrastructure development. Many believe that these projects can stimulate the local economy.

Political Divide in Opposition

All major demographic groups show opposition to data centers, but the intensity varies. A significant number of Democrats (56%) are strongly opposed, compared to 39% of Republicans and 48% of independents. Women also show higher levels of strong opposition at 55%, compared to 43% of men. Interestingly, geographic differences also exist, with higher opposition in the Midwest (76%) and South (75%) compared to the East (68%) and West (63%).

Environmental concerns particularly drive the opposition. About 78% of individuals worried about environmental quality are against data centers, compared to just 52% of those who are unconcerned.

Implications for Tech Companies

For AI technology to grow in the U.S., additional data centers are essential. However, the strong opposition from the public poses a significant challenge for tech companies. Many Americans are adopting a “not in my backyard” attitude, especially given that almost half of respondents strongly oppose new constructions. This level of resistance could lead to local activism and legal challenges against proposed projects.

As a result, the debate over data centers may significantly impact local and state elections. Politicians who support these developments may find themselves in politically risky situations, complicating the path forward for tech companies looking to expand their AI infrastructure.

Americans Show Strong Opposition to Data Centers in Their Communities Major tech companies like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Meta are heavily investing in data centers, crucial for powering artificial intelligence (AI).
