Congo’s top public health agency has confirmed a new outbreak of Ebola in the country. Officials reported 65 deaths and 246 suspected cases in the Ituri province, a remote area that has raised concerns due to its distance from healthcare facilities.<\/p>\n
Health experts are currently looking into whether this outbreak is linked to the Ebola Zaire strain, which is known to be the most dangerous form of the virus, or if it’s a different variant, according to the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).<\/p>\n
Additionally, Uganda reported its first Ebola-related death linked to this outbreak, involving a Congolese man whose case originated in Congo. Health officials are particularly worried about regions near the Uganda and South Sudan borders due to travel related to mining, weak health infrastructure, and ongoing security challenges.<\/p>\n
Ebola is a highly contagious disease that can be deadly. It spreads through bodily fluids such as blood and vomit, with symptoms including fever, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain, and internal bleeding. As of now, only four out of the reported deaths have been confirmed through laboratory testing.<\/p>\n
Preliminary tests indicate that this outbreak might not involve the Zaire strain, which caused a severe epidemic in Congo from 2018 to 2020, resulting in over 1,000 deaths.<\/p>\n
The World Health Organization (WHO) dispatched a response team to assist Congo and collected samples from the affected areas. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus commended Congo for its effective handling of past Ebola outbreaks and announced an emergency funding of $500,000 to help with containment efforts.<\/p>\n
Congo has stockpiled treatments for Ebola and has about 2,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine. However, health officials warned that this vaccine is effective only against the Zaire strain and not against others like Sudan or Bundibugyo.<\/p>\n
