This visit comes amid concerns about the management of the country’s cricket board, especially after the government set up an interim committee to take over Sri Lanka Cricket.

Sources indicate that ICC deputy chairman Imran Khwaja is expected to arrive in Sri Lanka on Friday evening. He will be joined on Saturday by another senior ICC figure, who also holds a significant position within the BCCI.

This trip is particularly important for Sri Lanka Cricket, following the appointment of a nine-member interim panel on April 29 by Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage. This decision came after the resignation of SLC president Shammi Silva along with the executive committee.

The newly formed group, named the Cricket Transformation Committee, will be led by opposition member Eran Wickremaratna. It includes notable former Sri Lankan cricketers such as Kumar Sangakkara, Roshan Mahanama, and Sidath Wettimuny, among others.

The interim committee’s main goal is to implement structural reforms within Sri Lanka Cricket, an organization that has faced ongoing issues related to management and stability for many years.

While the specific reasons behind the resignation of Silva’s executive committee remain unclear, it followed a meeting with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. Local media reports suggest that the government’s intervention was prompted by the national men’s cricket team’s poor performance in recent times. This led the executive committee to resign collectively, allowing the interim panel to take over swiftly.

In a statement, Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed that Silva and the other committee members had resigned immediately. They also noted that this decision was officially communicated to both President Dissanayake and Minister Gamage.

The ICC team’s visit is significant, especially after Gamage mentioned that the Sri Lankan government had not yet formally informed the ICC about the interim committee’s establishment.

According to the Sri Lankan Sports Law of 1973, the Sports Minister has the power to dissolve national sports bodies and appoint interim groups. However, many see direct governmental influence on elected cricket boards as against ICC’s regulations.

It remains to be seen how the ICC will respond to these recent changes, but reports indicate that the governing body is already aware of the situation and has been assured that elections for a new administration will be held in due course.

A high-level team from the International Cricket Council (ICC), which includes a prominent official from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is on its way to Sri Lanka.
