Canada’s Efforts to Revoke Citizenship of 26\/11 Terror Attack Convict Face Challenges<\/strong><\/p>\n Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key figure behind the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, has been convicted of terrorism-related charges and extradited to India from the United States. However, the Canadian government is currently facing difficulties in revoking his citizenship. One of the main hurdles is a change in citizenship laws made during Justin Trudeau\u2019s time as Prime Minister, which removed terrorism as a valid reason for such actions.<\/p>\n According to recent reports, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has requested a Federal court to revoke Rana\u2019s citizenship, but the case is still unresolved. The 26\/11 attacks in Mumbai resulted in the deaths of 166 people, excluding the nine attackers who were linked to the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba, which is banned in Canada.<\/p>\n Since Rana became a Canadian citizen in May 2001, he allegedly misrepresented his residency, claiming to live in Ottawa. Investigations by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) revealed that he actually spent most of that time in Chicago. However, because of the legislative changes in 2016, IRCC can only pursue revocation by proving that he gained his citizenship through deception.<\/p>\n Experts highlight that the process for revoking citizenship can take years. Efforts to address Rana\u2019s case reportedly began in May 2024. Joe Adam George, a national security analyst, criticized the slow response from Canada regarding the citizenship of a convicted terrorist, emphasizing systemic failures in immigration oversight and national security.<\/p>\n Rana, a former captain in the Pakistan Army, collaborated with David Headley, an accomplice currently serving time in the U.S. for his role in the attacks.
