Eighteen Americans are currently in quarantine at two federal centers after returning from the MV Hondius cruise ship. It’s not yet clear how long they will stay in quarantine or where they will be placed. Health officials in the U.S. are interviewing the passengers to determine their exposure to any infected individuals and assess their ability to quarantine safely at home, should that option arise.<\/p>\n
Dr. Brendan Jackson, acting director at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, emphasized the goal of minimizing restrictions while ensuring safety during a recent media briefing. Symptoms of the virus can take up to 42 days to appear, so if passengers are allowed to quarantine at home, they must be symptom-free and check in regularly with local health officials.<\/p>\n
The Andes strain of hantavirus, which can occasionally spread between people, poses some risk, though experts warn it usually does not spread easily. Dr. Bobbi S. Pritt from the Mayo Clinic mentioned that there is no evidence of widespread transmission outside close contacts or efficient airborne spread in public spaces. Currently, eleven cases of hantavirus have been reported from nearly 150 passengers, with three fatalities.<\/p>\n
Among the quarantined, sixteen Americans are at the National Quarantine Center in Omaha, Nebraska, while two are quarantined at Emory University in Atlanta. One person in Atlanta experienced mild symptoms but tested negative for hantavirus. All other passengers from both facilities have not tested positive.<\/p>\n
Dr. Michael Mina, an epidemiologist, noted that strict quarantine measures are necessary to prevent further cases and possible deaths, suggesting that even a temporary inconvenience like quarantine is worth preventing fatalities.<\/p>\n
Dr. Abraar Karan from Stanford Medicine raised concerns about the potential risks of home quarantining, pointing out that if someone becomes ill at home, it could complicate their transfer to a specialized facility.<\/p>\n
World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that more cases could emerge given the virus’s long incubation period. The WHO recommends that individuals quarantining at home should remain isolated from family members and wear protective masks if they need to interact with others.<\/p>\n
In contrast to the U.S., Zimbabwe’s health ministry has stated that its citizens from the cruise ship will stay together in a private facility during quarantine. Meanwhile, health officials in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands allow some passengers to isolate at home if safe conditions are met.<\/p>\n
Katelyn Jetelina, an epidemiologist, explained the trade-offs involved in public health decisions, noting the psychological toll the long ordeal at sea has taken on passengers. Many Americans who disembarked earlier are now quarantining at home, with health departments monitoring their symptoms.<\/p>\n
As recommendations may evolve in the coming days, Dr. Mara Jana Broadhurst noted that health officials are aiming for a balance between in-facility and home monitoring. Quarantine rooms at the University of Nebraska Medical Center are designed to feel more like hotel accommodations, offering exercise equipment and food delivery options. One passenger, Jake Rosmarin, expressed relief at being cared for and assured of access to medical attention should the need arise.
