Dong Yuyu, who worked as a commentator and editor, was arrested in February 2022 while he was having a meal with a Japanese diplomat at a restaurant.<\/p>\n On Friday, a court in Beijing announced the verdict, branding the then-Japanese ambassador Hideo Tarumi and Shanghai’s chief diplomat Masaru Okada as members of an espionage group, as per Dong’s family statement.<\/p>\n Dong was previously the deputy head of the editorial department at Guangming Daily, a state-owned newspaper. He had also contributed to the Chinese version of the New York Times.
