The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has decided to extend the deadline for software updates on specific foreign-made Wi-Fi routers and drones, pushing it back to January 1, 2029. This decision comes after concerns that stopping updates too soon could leave millions of devices vulnerable to hacking and security threats.<\/p>\n
Initially, the cutoff for updates was set for 2027, but the FCC\u2019s Office of Engineering and Technology (OET) realized that it was important to ensure that these devices could continue receiving necessary updates. The extension only applies to devices that were approved before the new restrictions were put in place.<\/p>\n
The White House had previously supported these restrictions, citing potential national security risks. However, experts in cybersecurity highlighted that discontinuing updates can expose devices to cyberattacks, as updates often include important fixes for security vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n
In their recent announcement, the FCC emphasized that these previously authorized foreign-made devices will be allowed to receive updates that help protect U.S. consumers until at least 2029. These updates will address vulnerabilities and ensure compatibility with various operating systems.<\/p>\n
The FCC also noted that specific circumstances warranted this extension, stating it was in the “public interest.” The office plans to suggest that the commission consider making this waiver a formal long-term policy through rulemaking.<\/p>\n

It is important to note that this extension only covers devices already approved, while new foreign-made routers and drones remain banned unless they get special permission from the Pentagon or the Department of Homeland Security.
