His comments highlight how Israel is trying to leverage internal dissent within Iran. Mossad has begun reaching out to Iranian citizens by sending messages in Farsi, urging them to share photos and videos of oppressive actions taken by their regime. Ailam reported significant Israeli military actions, with over 2,200 strikes targeting Iranians this week, which included operations against Hezbollah assets in Lebanon.

The recent arrest of two Israeli air force members on espionage accusations emphasizes Iran’s ongoing attempts to infiltrate Israel’s military. In the past year and a half, Israeli authorities, alongside the Shin Bet (Israel’s internal security service), have investigated more than 20 espionage cases involving around 40 to 50 suspects. Most of these suspects are still in custody.

Capt. Sefi Berger, who leads the investigation into Iranian espionage, noted that Iran mainly aims to collect intelligence useful for planning attacks, detailed information about prominent figures, and sensitive sites.

The Recruitment of Israeli Informants by Iran

Payments to Israeli informants can differ widely. In one instance, a network of seven suspects reportedly received about $300,000, while an Iron Dome reservist was said to have earned merely $1,000. Some recruits receive as little as $21 yet remain incarcerated for extended periods.

Berger elaborated on the methods used by Iranian agents, which include infiltrating job-seeking groups on platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook and using pornographic websites for blackmail. Often, individuals are targeted due to emotional vulnerabilities that may cloud their moral judgment.

Former Shin Bet handler Gonen Ben Itzhak, who has recruited sources within Palestinian circles, expressed concern about the increasing attempts and some successes of espionage against Israel. He mentioned that social media is now a critical tool in identifying potential recruits, a tactic that wasn’t available in the past.

Consequences for Those Involved

In March, several indictments were filed against an Israeli civilian and three soldiers accused of working with Iranian intelligence. They allegedly documented sensitive locations, including train stations and shopping centers, and were directed to acquire weapons.

In a separate case, Ami Gaydarov, a 22-year-old from Haifa, was detained for allegedly attempting to manufacture explosives with intentions to target a senior Israeli official. Another intriguing case involved Miqdad Moder Hosni Natur, an Israeli Arab, who was arrested for allegedly spying after being introduced to an Iranian agent through the Al Jazeera network.

Under Israeli law, communicating with a foreign agent can lead to a 15-year prison sentence, while providing intelligence may result in over 10 years. Acts of aiding the enemy in wartime hold even harsher penalties.

Berger cautioned Israelis against underestimating the severity of these contacts. Actions that may seem innocent can have serious ramifications, potentially putting lives at risk.

The Ongoing Threat and Defense Measures

While several suspects remain in custody, cases are progressing through the legal system. One notable case involved Moti Maman, who was sentenced to 10 years after visiting Iran to engage with intelligence agents for plotting attacks in Israel.

Former Mossad operative Gad Shimron warned that, while espionage efforts have caused damage, their effects appear more tactical than strategic. However, he stressed the importance of vigilance, saying, “One should never underestimate the enemy.”

Overall, Israel’s counterintelligence efforts are crucial in thwarting Iranian schemes and protecting national security. As the landscape of espionage continues to evolve, so too must the strategies used by Israel to safeguard its interests.

Israel’s Counterintelligence Operations: Insights into Iranian Espionage Tactics Oded Ailam, a former head of Mossad’s counterterrorism unit, recently shared insights on Israel’s strategies against Iranian intelligence efforts.
