The country is getting ready to make a significant impact in international sports.

Ahmedabad will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, and there’s a lot of excitement surrounding India’s bid for the 2036 Olympics. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a vision for a fully developed India by 2047, with key focuses on elevating living standards, upgrading transport, enhancing education, and becoming a global hub for technology and innovation. This strong foundation underpins India’s ambitions for the Olympics and other international events.

“Our country today embodies a confident spirit that is eager to take the lead in shaping the future of global sports,” said Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, India’s Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports. He highlighted the nation’s growing ability to host notable sporting events as evidence of its progress. “Our athletes continue to excel, making us proud and showcasing India as a rising sporting power,” he added.

Sports Conclave and Future Events

This Thursday, Mandaviya will lead a national sports meeting in Delhi to evaluate India’s readiness for upcoming events like the 2026 Asian Games, the Commonwealth Games, and the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Discussions will also cover the National Sports Governance Act, which aims to ensure transparency in sports organizations and improve how international events are hosted and participated in.

India has already hosted three major cricket events this year: the Men’s T20 World Cup, the Women’s Premier League, and the ongoing Indian Premier League, which is one of the wealthiest franchise leagues around the world.

New Delhi is set to host the badminton world championships, Bhubaneshwar will hold a World Athletics Continental Tour event, and Ahmedabad will welcome the Asian Weightlifting Championships. Additionally, Indian officials are exploring the possibility of bringing Formula 1 racing back to India for the first time since 2013, and efforts are underway to reintroduce cricket to the Olympics for the Los Angeles games in 2028.

Commonwealth Games As a Measuring Stick

Beyond cricket, the Commonwealth Games serve as a significant indicator of India’s sports development. New Delhi previously hosted the Asian Games in 1982 and 1951, as well as the often-controversial Commonwealth Games in 2010, which faced numerous logistic challenges.

However, Indian officials are optimistic about the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad. The Sardar Patel Sports Enclave is positioned as a central venue for the 2030 Games, accommodating thousands of athletes from 74 nations. The enclave also includes the world’s largest cricket stadium, the Narendra Modi Stadium, which can be adapted to host a variety of sports.

Beyond Infrastructure

This vision for sports in India is growing beyond just infrastructure. There’s a strong push for success on the field, with consistent efforts over the past decade to establish a vibrant sports environment. More than 15 professional leagues across various sports are helping to develop talent and create opportunities.

The Sports Authority of India has set up centers dedicated to different sports, providing top-notch facilities and specialized training aimed at producing Olympic and other international medalists. The progress is evident, with India achieving its best-ever medal haul at the Asian Games in 2023 and winning various international titles in badminton and boxing.

Notable athletes like Neeraj Chopra, an Olympic and world champion in javelin throw, are leading the charge in showcasing India’s potential.

Encouraging Participation

Hari Ranjan Rao, Sports Secretary, emphasized that while infrastructure is being developed, there’s also a focus on promoting sports within communities. The Khelo India, or Play India, initiative has been actively encouraging participation at youth and university levels across various sports since 2018.

“Our goal is to get more people engaged in an active lifestyle,” Rao said, highlighting the importance of increased participation for future success.

As India prepares to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and advance its bid for the 2036 Olympics, Mandaviya expressed confidence in the country’s readiness. “We are determined to become a global sporting powerhouse, not only in producing champions but also in hosting world-class events.”

India Poised for Sporting Growth NEW DELHI — India is on the rise in the world of sports, backed by its huge population, a booming economy, and a strong presence in cricket.
