This situation has left health officials worldwide scrambling to locate these individuals, who have since returned to their home countries across Europe, Africa, and beyond.

The cruise ship company, Oceanwide Expeditions, revealed that 29 passengers disembarked on April 24, almost two weeks after the first death was reported on board. Dutch authorities estimate the number of those who disembarked is closer to 40, which includes people from at least a dozen different nationalities.

Among those who left the ship was a man who returned to Switzerland and has since tested positive for the Andes strain of hantavirus—a rare variant that can transmit between people.

The outbreak has already led to at least three deaths. A Dutch man passed away on April 11, and his body was taken to St. Helena, a remote island in the South Atlantic. His wife also disembarked there but tragically collapsed and died at the Johannesburg airport shortly afterward.

Health officials believe that the couple may have contracted the virus during a bird-watching tour in Ushuaia, Argentina—specifically while visiting a landfill. This exposure might have occurred before they boarded the cruise ship.

Hantavirus is typically spread through rodent droppings, although the World Health Organization notes that human-to-human transmission is rare but possible. Following the death of the Dutch man, more passengers were evacuated as the situation escalated.

A British man was transported to South Africa from Ascension Island, and three others, which included the ship’s doctor, were airlifted to Europe for further medical treatment as the ship moved near Cape Verde.

Now, as passengers have traveled back to different continents, officials in South Africa and Europe are collaborating to track their movements and identify anyone who may have come into contact with the virus. This complex international effort is crucial for preventing further spread of the disease.

Hantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship Sparks Global Search for Passengers A serious outbreak of hantavirus aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship has raised alarm as nearly 40 passengers reportedly left the vessel without any contact tracing.
