Recent elections in four states and one territory have seen the Hindu nationalist party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), take charge once again.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP is part of a larger coalition known as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). With a significant win in West Bengal, the BJP now governs 18 of India’s 28 states, which accounts for nearly 80% of the country’s population, according to analysis from India Today.

The NDA coalition controls governing power in 21 of the 28 states, establishing a strong political presence.

Paul, a pastoral coach working in India, has raised concerns about the BJP’s campaign tactics in West Bengal, noting that it appeared militarized. “A friend there mentioned that it felt like a war zone,” he said, pointing out the aggressive methods used to defeat the incumbent chief minister and achieve a landslide victory by claiming over 200 seats.

Moreover, issues such as a voter list cleanup reportedly disenfranchised around 2.7 million individuals, many of whom were Muslims, according to findings by the SABAR Institute, an independent research organization in Kolkata.

What’s Next for India?

The BJP’s increased power could lead to troubling developments for religious minorities. Paul warns that the party has previously enacted laws against conversions in states it has won. While these laws are marketed as protecting religious freedoms, they can restrict them in practice, existing in at least 12 states across India.

There are concerns that the BJP might seek to shift the nation from a secular republic to a Hindu republic following its latest victories. “Having captured West Bengal, it’s likely that a constitutional amendment will be proposed soon,” Paul predicted.

If these predictions hold true, Christians and Muslims may face challenging times ahead. “This will significantly affect missions,” Paul said. “We may need to alter our approach to missions, perhaps going underground. Many churches have already closed in states with anti-conversion laws.”

This evolving situation is not a surprise to God, and Paul urges people to pray. “Please pray that the Church remains strong and united,” he emphasized. He also called for wisdom for churches navigating government regulations and asked for collective efforts to develop strategies to live out their faith in this increasingly challenging context.

Political Shift in India Raises Concerns for Religious Minorities India’s political scene is changing, and it has serious implications for religious minorities.
