Iran is facing accusations of contributing to the ongoing civil war in Sudan by providing attack drones to local forces. These drones have reportedly been responsible for the deaths of women and children amidst the violence.<\/p>\n
The conflict, which began on April 15, 2023, has already led to an estimated 400,000 deaths and displaced over 11 million people, creating one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world.<\/p>\n
Mariam Wahba, a research analyst with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, revealed that Iran has been supplying the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) with the Mohajer-6 drones since 2013. These drones are manufactured by Qods Aviation Industries, a company sanctioned by the U.S.<\/p>\n
The U.S. State Department has expressed deep concern over the civilians being targeted by these drone strikes. Reports indicate that both the SAF and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the rebel militia they are fighting, are using these drones increasingly against the civilian population.<\/p>\n
Wahba noted that between December 2023 and July 2024, there were at least seven cargo flights from Iran to Sudan, likely carrying drone components. A U.S. resident of Iranian descent was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport for allegedly trying to broker a $70 million deal to supply more drones and equipment to Sudan’s military.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for the State Department stated, “We are worried about the spread of drone warfare in Sudan and its impact on innocent civilians. Recent attacks have destroyed hospitals and schools, leading to civilian casualties.”<\/p>\n
Reports also surfaced about a drone attack that targeted a U.N. aid truck, which was carrying emergency supplies in North Darfur. The drone strike resulted in the destruction of all supplies.<\/p>\n
The rising use of drones in the conflict has created a sense of fear among children in Sudan. UNICEF\u2019s communication manager, Ricardo Pires, highlighted the grave situation, saying that the presence of drones turns schools and hospitals into dangerous places.<\/p>\n
