Many unions are becoming partners with major tech companies and government officials, promoting the idea that the U.S. is in a critical competition with China for AI leadership.

Unions have emerged as key players, confronting community concerns and opposing legislative actions that threaten their interests. They are often found working alongside business-friendly Republicans, which has forced Democrats to navigate a tough choice between various factions within their party.

Unlike tech executives, union representatives openly address issues related to data centers, such as energy and water usage, rising utility costs, and local noise complaints. Rob Bair, president of the Pennsylvania Building and Construction Trades Council, emphasized the importance of the jobs created by these centers. “They provide many construction jobs that benefit local communities,” he stated.

Bair also encourages communities not to simply oppose projects but to communicate their needs effectively, whether that means asking for project enhancements or funding for local schools. “If you don’t ask, you won’t receive,” he said.

As the construction of data centers accelerates, unions are expanding their training facilities and witnessing rapid membership growth. States report a significant uptick in working hours and apprentice enrollment, with some training centers doubling their class sizes.

In Columbus, Ohio, data centers account for about 40% of work hours for the Columbus-Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council, while in the Washington, D.C., area, the number jumps to at least 50% for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 26.

The North America’s Building Trades Unions has reported record memberships and apprenticeships recently. Their president, Sean McGarvey, likens this surge to growth seen in the 1950s, tracing it back to the rise of data centers, power plants, and investment from the Biden administration in clean technology initiatives.

The energy demands of data centers are spurring a wave of new power plant constructions, revitalizing unions involved with energy production. The Boilermakers Local 154 has gone from having no apprentices for four years to recruiting over 200 in a single class, illustrating the dramatic turnaround.

Tech companies acknowledge the need for trained labor and are investing heavily in training programs, often collaborating with unions to ensure skilled workers are available for their projects. Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, highlighted the vital role that skilled union workers play in shaping the AI landscape.

Google reported that its data centers primarily rely on union labor and recently allocated $10 million to a program aimed at increasing the number of trained electricians by 70%.

Mark McManus, head of the United Association of Union Plumbers and Pipefitters, recognized the criticism about unions partnering with large corporations but defended the collaboration, arguing that such projects would proceed regardless of union positions. He mentioned that his union is experiencing record membership levels and is involved in a significant portion of data center constructions across the nation.

While it’s tough to ascertain the exact share of data center projects utilizing union labor, a recent survey indicated that about one-third of such construction may involve unions, mirroring national commercial construction trends. Unions have successfully negotiated labor agreements for major projects, including a campus for Oracle and OpenAI in Michigan.

When Governor Josh Shapiro announced a $20 billion investment by Amazon for data centers in Pennsylvania, Bair was present to support the partnership. “We are building something unique here together,” Shapiro remarked.

In various state legislatures, unions have also countered proposals that could hinder data center development, showing their influence on policy discussions. Pennsylvania Senator Katie Muth mentioned the difficulties of rallying support for regulatory measures against data centers due to the powerful backing from unions.

Union members have been active in local government meetings across the nation, sometimes leading to mixed reactions. In Joliet, Illinois, a public speaker raised concerns about union representatives allegedly pressuring attendees to support projects. However, elsewhere, union leaders received praise for bringing insightful perspectives to council discussions.

In summary, building trade unions are establishing a strong foothold in the evolving AI economy, fostering relationships with tech companies, and expanding their workforce while addressing community concerns along the way.

Union Trade Groups Team Up with Tech Giants for AI Boom HARRISBURG, Pa. — Building trade unions, traditionally seen as representatives of American workers, are now closely linked with some of the wealthiest companies in the world as they contribute to the growth of the artificial intelligence (AI) sector in the U.S. With a surge

[34
1658,114,28587,4139,26845,39476,39526,118,4338
0":"post-30517","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-technology","8":"tag-artificial-intelligence","9":"tag-business","10":"tag-data-management-and-storage","11":"tag-general-news","12":"tag-information-technology","13":"tag-labor-unions","14":"tag-legislation","15":"tag-technology","16":"tag-u-s-news
["GET
