This annual observance, known as Workers\u2019 Memorial Day, takes place on April 28, marking the anniversary of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, which became law in 1970. It serves as both a moment of remembrance and a reminder of the ongoing need to promote safe working environments for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>In California, a total of 419 workers lost their lives in workplace incidents in 2024, according to the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI). Each loss profoundly affects families and communities statewide.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Gavin Newsom has expressed his condolences through a proclamation honoring Workers\u2019 Memorial Day.<\/p>\n<p>As we reflect on the lives lost, we are reminded of the critical importance of worker safety. Fortunately, the latest CFOI data shows that California has seen improvements in workplace safety over the past two years, with fatalities decreasing by 17% since 2022. The state&#8217;s fatality rate remains lower than the national average.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About Cal\/OSHA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cal\/OSHA operates within the Department of Industrial Relations to safeguard workers from health and safety risks in nearly all workplaces across California.<\/p>\n<p>All workers, regardless of their immigration status, are protected.
