This past weekend, the country recorded a peak power demand of 256 gigawatts (GW) on Saturday, surpassing the 252 GW reached just a day before. These figures indicate the onset of the peak electricity demand season in India, according to recent government data.

The records set over the weekend exceeded the previous high of 250 GW achieved in May 2024. Although solar power contributes significantly to daytime electricity generation, India continues to rely heavily on coal-fired plants during the evenings. Coal remains a key source of flexible and dependable power to address the rising demand.

The hot summer months, particularly from April to June, traditionally drive the increase in power consumption in India. As temperatures escalate, electricity usage tends to rise sharply. After a period of milder temperatures saw demand growth slow down to its lowest in six years, the current heat waves have pushed consumption back to record levels.

According to sources reported by the Economic Times, coal demand from power plants is expected to climb by 11.5% during the April to June quarter, coinciding with peak electricity demand in May and June. As the second-largest coal consumer and importer globally, India has a sufficient supply to meet the increased demands of the summer months.

In preparation for these challenging conditions, India’s Power Minister instructed coal-fired plants to operate at maximum capacity starting April 1. This move aims to ensure that the grid remains stable during the peak demand periods this summer.

Experts predict that India could see an all-time high peak demand of 270 GW this year, with potential for it to rise past 283 GW if extreme heat persists. Such levels would complicate grid management and likely increase coal generation further.

As the summer heats up, India’s energy landscape is set to face significant challenges and transformations to keep up with soaring demand.

India’s Record Power Demand Amid Heat Waves India is experiencing a surge in electricity demand as early summer heat waves push consumption to new heights.
