This achievement is a crucial step in creating a supply chain for rare earth metals and magnets across the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p>Barbara Humpton, CEO of USA Rare Earth, expressed pride in reaching this milestone, stating, &#8220;Producing commercial-grade yttrium metal at LCM strengthens our role as a leader in rare earth materials and technology.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yttrium is a valuable metal found in various high-tech and medical applications. It is often found alongside other rare earth elements, which is why it\u2019s included in that category. In aerospace, yttrium enhances aluminum and magnesium alloys and is vital for thermal barrier coatings used in jet engines. The metal also aids in semiconductor manufacturing by protecting components in plasma chambers and limiting contamination. In medicine, yttrium is utilized in certain cancer treatments and surgical lasers.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the U.S. relies entirely on imports for yttrium, predominantly sourced from China. This dependency highlights the importance of developing domestic and allied supply chains for this essential metal.<\/p>\n<p>USA Rare Earth is working towards a complete yttrium supply chain, beginning with ore extracted from its Round Top deposit in Texas. This operation will not only produce yttrium but also a variety of other critical minerals.<\/p>\n<p>Humpton added, &#8220;With our upcoming yttrium extraction at Round Top and our oxide processing capabilities, USA Rare Earth is equipped to support aerospace, defense, and advanced manufacturing sectors that cannot depend only on Chinese supplies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The production of over 99% pure yttrium at the LCM facility marks a significant step in the company&#8217;s goal to establish a comprehensive rare earths value chain, which includes mining, separation, metal-making, alloy creation, and magnet manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>Further supporting this initiative, USA Rare Earth has launched a rare earth metals and magnet facility in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and is investing in the French company Carester to enhance processing capabilities in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>By expanding its operations throughout the entire value chain, USA Rare Earth aims to supply the crucial rare earth oxides, metals, alloys, and magnets needed for sectors such as aerospace, defense, and advanced manufacturing across North America and Europe, aligning with efforts to diversify supply chains beyond China.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>USA Rare Earth Achieves Milestone in Yttrium Production USA Rare Earth Inc. has successfully produced yttrium metal with a purity of 99% at its Less Common Metals subsidiary in the UK.
